5 Brilliant Agencies Building and Running WebGL Projects

Interactive agencies are currently using WebGL to develop amazing user experiences with an engaging design, which users can enjoy without having to first download or install any plug-ins. 3D technologies can be used in-browser to create beautiful and highly engaging visual effects. That’s where WebGL enters. This graphic application programming interface (API) is used around the world for real-time rendering of 3D and 2D graphics within a browser.

We selected some recent examples from agencies around the world, some of which have even received awards. The idea is to give an overview of the current state of the WebGL development in the agency landscape

Mallard and Claret

Mallard and Claret is an award-winning, London-based creative web design and development agency, specializing in WordPress and WooCommerce. They work in partnership with ambitious and creative clients to produce innovative, best-in-class and award-winning websites that are search engine friendly and deliver results.

The agency was recently hired by Brother Film, a creatively-led, video and music production company, based in Peckham and run by three brothers. They designed and developed a single WordPress platform that could be used for both their film company and their music business

Both sites are independent but closely interlinked, with the ability to scroll-up (instead of the traditional down) to move between the two sites. They also feature a neat scroll-based webGL interaction to help bring their brand to life online. The agency was nominated for the Awwwards for their work.

Jam3

Based in Canada, Jam3 is a design and experience agency. They help the world’s top brands launch products and design new customer experiences in digital and beyond. Rather than make ads, they create relevance with consumers by attributing purpose and innovation in everything we do.

The agency recently partnered up with Google to create a playful WebGL experience showcasing Google Cloud’s commitment to helping healthcare during the challenging times of a worldwide pandemic and beyond. They turned what was supposed to be a huge live event into an interactive showcase of the power of Google Cloud.

Mediamonks

MediaMonks is a global creative production company that partners with clients across industries and markets to craft amazing work for leading businesses and brands. Its integrated production capabilities span the entire creative spectrum, covering anything you could possibly want from a production partner, and probably more.

The agency developed an interactive guide for the acclaimed Netflix mystery series Dark. The site sees viewers explore the who, what and when of the show in eight languages, filtered by season and episode. The companion site, based on WebGL, is equal parts comprehensive and comprehensible, helping viewers stay on top.

Full-page articles describe every major event on the show, and an animated timeline establishes the years when each event takes place. Objects, locations and time eras were also given a narrative. A nifty spoiler filter ensured fans could revisit the site as they make their way through the series.

SonicJam

SonicJam is a web production studio based in Tokyo. They believe small innovations for inspiring “fun”, “wow”s, and “giggles” can make the world a more enjoyable place. The agency has wide experience in planning digital communication strategies, development of installation devices and planning and producing websites.

As part of their work, SonicJam helped to renew the corporate site of Crazy Co, which develops unique celebration services such as “CRAZY WEDDING”, a pioneer of custom-made weddings. The agency integrated the corporate site and the service site, using WebGL throughout the entire new site.

Merci Michel

Merci-Michel is a digital production agency, founded in late 2012 in France. They are specialized in creating cutting edge interactive solutions, ground breaking UIs and immersive campaigns. They design digital experiences, including websites, mobile apps and installations, using stylish typefaces and playful interactions.

Among their recent work, the agency was hired by the drug manufacturer Novartis to develop a WebGL website that focused on wet AMD, a chronic and progressive disease that affects central vision. The site invites visitors to discover the stories of wet AMD patients through their own eyes.
