“Custom Solutions Are Where the Real Value Lies” — Jerry Diender on Elemental’s Global Mindset

Cape Town, November 21st, 2025

Elemental is a Cape Town–based custom web and software development agency specialising in complex websites, web applications, and mobile apps. Founded in 2005, the agency has evolved from building bespoke intranet systems to delivering fully integrated, beautifully designed digital experiences. With a strong blend of technical expertise and creative capability, Elemental has developed and designed sophisticated solutions for clients across industries and continents. Their portfolio includes collaborations with some of the world’s most recognisable brands — BMW, Mini, Red Bull, Coca-Cola, Lego, Heineken, Adidas, Toyota — a testament to the trust placed in the agency and the quality of work they consistently deliver.

Originally from the Netherlands, Jerry Diender is the co-CEO of Elemental — a hands-on leader known for transforming strategy into ideas that genuinely engage users and clients. More than a director, Jerry is an approachable team catalyst who encourages creativity, collaboration, and big thinking across the agency. Whether he’s guiding brainstorming sessions, supporting the team on complex deliverables, or steering Elemental’s long-term vision, he leads by example. Outside the office, Jerry can be found on Cape Town’s beaches paddle-boarding, enjoying life’s adventures, and embracing his roles as an exceptional father and dedicated husband. His philosophy is simple yet powerful: “Our offering is diverse, but the goal is specific — to take your idea to market efficiently and effectively.”

It’s a pleasure to connect with you, Jerry. You’re based in Cape Town, one of Africa’s most inspiring cities. How has the city — and South African culture more broadly — shaped your outlook and passions?

Cape Town has had a profound influence on both my outlook and approach to life. It’s a city that embodies balance — where natural beauty meets functionality, and where creativity coexists with structure. Living here teaches you to value design that is both inspiring and purposeful, something I strive to reflect in how we build digital experiences at Elemental.

South African culture has shaped my professional DNA in many ways. There’s a spirit of innovation, resilience, and problem-solving that comes from working in an environment where you often need to make things work creatively. That grit has been invaluable in business, pushing me to adapt, find solutions, and keep moving forward.

And of course, Cape Town’s sheer beauty plays a major role. Being surrounded by mountains, ocean, and open space has given me a deep appreciation for nature. The ocean, in particular, is my place of balance — its power and rhythm serve as a constant reminder of perspective in both life and work.

If someone were visiting Cape Town with an interest in creativity and design, what places or events would you recommend they experience?

Cape Town is overflowing with inspiration. The most iconic starting point is Table Mountain. It looks completely different depending on the angle, time of day, or season — a constant reminder that perspective changes everything.

The Zeitz MOCAA Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is another must-visit. The architecture is breathtaking and the exhibitions are bold, diverse, and thought-provoking. I often draw creative energy from the work shown there.

And in terms of events, Design Indaba is the unrivalled creative festival in South Africa. The talks, the atmosphere, and the multidisciplinary projects truly showcase the depth of talent across the region.

What first drew you into the world of web development and digital innovation?

I was fascinated by how I could use code to manipulate things, solve problems, and build interesting projects. The fact that you can write something and immediately see it come to life really excited me — and that’s what opened the door to becoming a developer.

Where do you spend most of your time these days, and what does a typical workday look like for you?

These days I focus heavily on internal operations — particularly managing our production team and ensuring projects run smoothly. I spend a lot of time refining our systems and processes to make workflows more efficient and delivery more seamless.

I’m also very involved in people and culture. I work with HR to ensure our team feels supported, heard, and genuinely happy in their environment. I join the later stages of recruitment as well, making sure new talent aligns with Elemental’s values.

Beyond the day-to-day, I also step back to focus on strategy, long-term direction, and ensuring the company grows in a healthy, sustainable way.

Let’s go back to 2005 — what vision did you have when you co-founded Elemental, and how has that vision evolved?

When we started Elemental in 2005, our vision was simple: build a specialist design and development agency centred on quality, creativity, and collaboration. From the beginning, we knew that a small, close-knit team would help us create a strong culture and deliver exceptional work.

We realised early on that the biggest value lay in custom-built solutions. Every company has unique needs, challenges, and goals — and only bespoke software can truly address those. That belief still drives everything we do today.

Even though we started small, we always aimed to collaborate with companies around the world and show that top-tier digital solutions can come from South Africa.

Elemental now collaborates with clients across South Africa and around the world. How do you maintain a unified culture while embracing global diversity?

We’ve always believed that culture starts with being together, so our entire team works in-office five days a week. It’s unusual today, but it works for us. It enables faster problem-solving, more spontaneous collaboration, and a shared energy that remote work simply can’t replicate.

Even though our clients are global, our approach doesn’t change. At the end of the day, we’re here to solve problems and add real value. That consistency keeps our culture strong and our partnerships meaningful.

The agency describes itself as “a bespoke web development agency.” What makes web development such a unique and demanding creative field?

Web development is unique because it blends creativity, usability, and functionality in equal measure. It’s not enough for something to look great — it has to work beautifully too. Balancing design and logic is where the real magic happens.

After nearly two decades and hundreds of projects, what kind of work still excites you the most?

I’m most excited by work that creates a real, measurable impact on a client’s business. When great technology and design dramatically improve how they operate or grow, that’s incredibly rewarding.

I also love projects that push boundaries — creatively, technically, or strategically. Those are the ones that help us evolve and stay inspired.

As Managing Director, how do you encourage creativity and innovation within your team?

Creativity thrives when people feel trusted and supported. I encourage the team to share ideas freely — even the wild ones — because that’s often where the best solutions come from.

Being together in the office helps keep that creative flow strong. And I push the team to stay curious and always look for better ways to do things. That’s where real innovation happens.

Do you believe creativity and problem-solving can be taught, or are they qualities that need to be cultivated?

I believe creativity is innate. You either have that instinctive eye for ideas, or you don’t — though it can certainly be refined.

Problem-solving, however, can definitely be taught. It’s about breaking things down logically and recognising patterns. Experience is what sharpens that skill.

How do you balance creative exploration with the structure required to meet client expectations?

It’s always a balance between freedom and focus. We give the team space to explore creatively, but within a clear framework aligned to the client’s goals. Strong systems and clear communication keep projects structured while allowing creativity to thrive.

Elemental has collaborated with world-famous brands — BMW, Red Bull, Lego, Coca-Cola. How have these partnerships shaped your team?

Working with global brands has raised our standards significantly. These clients expect exceptional quality, precision, and consistency, which has pushed us to refine our processes even further.

We’ve learned that great work is not only about creativity or technical skill — it’s about reliability, communication, and trust.

Is there a project you’d like to highlight that truly represents Elemental’s creative and technical DNA?

Yes! We recently completed a major property platform called The Foyer, designed to shake up the South African property sector. It blends sleek UI/UX with powerful matchmaking algorithms to create a seamless experience.

How do you see technology — from AI to automation — shaping the future of web development?

AI will increasingly support development by speeding up workflows and helping build proofs-of-concept faster. Automation will continue to expand as companies connect systems and streamline their processes.

What advice would you give to young developers and creatives who want to build a meaningful career in the digital world?

Always do things thoroughly and properly — don’t cut corners. Think long-term and ensure your work can scale with data, traffic, and usage. Building that mindset will make you a much better designer or developer.

What helps you disconnect and recharge outside of work?

Going to the beach, camping, and spending time with my family.

And finally, can you share a fun fact or surprising story about yourself?

I’m actually born and raised in The Netherlands — but South Africa is now my home (the weather is much better!).
