The International Women’s Day is annually held on the 8th of March to celebrate women’s achievements worldwide and throughout history. This day grew out of the labour movement to become a UN-recognised annual event. It all started in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. It was the Socialist Party of America who declared the first National Women’s Day, a year later.
Things were made official in 1975 when the United Nations (UN) started celebrating the day and later set an annual theme. The first one in 1996 was “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future”.
International Women’s Day has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society but also to raise awareness of continued inequality.
It is common in some countries that children give presents to their teachers and usually women receive small presents from friends or family. At work, they usually make a special mention through internal newsletters or by handing out promotional material focusing on the day.
2018 was no exception and so, many digital agencies shared pictures of their team and women who inspire them at work. Take a look!
