Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated mostly in Canada and in the United States. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.
In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October as an annual holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season, whereas in the United States, it has been an annual tradition by presidential proclamation since 1863. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November.
According to some historians, the first celebration of Thanksgiving in North America occurred in 1578 during the voyage of Martin Frobisher from England, who was looking for the Northwest Passage. Although the origin of Thanksgiving is still disputed, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday.
This year, in Canada the holiday fell on the 9th of October, while in the United States it was on the 23rd of November.
