The London Design Festival commemorates its 17th edition

London Design Festival held its annual celebration of design with an inspiring program of more than 300 events, including Landmark Projects, Festival Commissions, Projects at the V&A and Special Projects.

The highly anticipated festival comprised 11 Design Districts, four Design Destinations and one Design Route.

London’s most iconic locations were transformed by a series of commissions and installations by internationally renowned designers. Each intervention added an exciting new dimension to the city’s streets, exploring the power of design to shape our world and demonstrating the role it plays in how we live, feel and solve problems.

The Victoria and Albert Museum was the official Festival hub and hosted a series of specially commissioned projects and curated collection of displays. The Museum was also the host to London Design Festival’s thought leadership program, Global Design Forum, which celebrated design with an inspirational line-up of talks.

Keynote speakers at the Global Design Forum included architect Kengo Kuma, Pentagram’s partner Astrid Stavro, Sustainability and Innovation Director at Stella McCartney Claire Bergkamp and Game of Thrones designer Deborah Riley.

Over the past 17 years, the London Design Festival has continued to evolve, and we are excited to launch this year program, which was our most ambitious to date,” said London Design Festival Director, Ben Evans CBE. “We hope audiences from the UK and further afield discovered something thought provoking and inspiring and celebrate our city’s diverse creative talent.”

Each year a Jury composed of established designers, industry commentators and previous winners choose recipients of The London Design Medals across different categories. Winners are chosen from a wide range of design disciplines and awards for their exceptional contribution to their field.

The Design Medal was awarded to Tom Dixon, who has distinguished within the industry and demonstrated consistent design excellence. Meanwhile, Dame Vivienne Westwood was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Medal and Daniel Charny received the Design Innovation Medal.

The festival was established in 2003 by Evans and Sir John Sorrell CBE. 17 years later, London Design Festival arrived to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world. The festival has earned the reputation as a key calendar moment of London’s autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: “London Design Festival is a fantastic event which brings together designers from across the globe and demonstrates the capital’s position as a powerhouse for the creative industries. London is known for its creativity and continues to attract the best companies.
