Webby Awards honors the best of the Internet

Hundreds attended the Webby’s ceremony in New York.

With a 2.000-member judging body, the Webby Awards celebrated a new edition in New York City, honoring the excellence in areas such as websites, film and video, media, mobile and podcasts.

The 23rd Annual Webby Awards were presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), a judging body formed by industry experts and technology innovators. The award is one of the oldest Internet-oriented honors and is associated with the phrase “The Oscars of the Internet.”

This year, a group of 14 individuals and firms were selected for special achievements awards. The list included actor Michael Douglas, actress/producer Issa Rae, late night hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, climate activist Greta Thunberg, Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty and entrepreneur Emily Weiss.

Comedian Jenny Slate led the celebration and won over the crowd with her unpredictable wit and humor. She reminisced on Y2K and the panic that ensued for no reason and talking about the funniest videos she’s seen on the Internet that made her “laugh so hard I sneezed up Doritos.”

Internet pioneer Vint Cerf was on hand to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Internet and bring to light the power the people in the room have to continue creating the “Internet We Want,” speaking to the theme of this year’s Webby Awards. “I expect you to keep inventing that future and making it safe and secure,” said Vint Cerf.

The Webbys honored excellence in 7 major media types: Websites, Video, Advertising, Media & PR, Social, Apps, Mobile, & Voice, Games, and Podcasts. Two honors were presented in every category — The Webby Award and The Webby People’s Voice Award.

On the Website category, Firebelly Design got the award on activism for its unstoppable campaign for Planned Parenthood, while the Red Collar Digital Agency was awarded in Architecture for its work for the Leviev Group. National Geographic also got an award for their work on data visualization.

Meanwhile, on Apps, Mobile & Voice, Sony Music was awarded for its app on David Bowie as well as HBO for its HBO GO app. Accenture got an award for its use of augmented reality as well as Adobe for the use of machine learning. Finally, Google got the award for best user experience for a Morse code key board.
