He also co-founded 4HK, a boutique digital marketing agency which aims to continuously innovate while driving performance for clients and brands.

In an interview with TIA, Andrew Lin described his life in Hong Kong and how he spends most of his time. He listed some of the critical factors for startups looking to build their brand presence and explained how they balance innovation with measurable results at 4HK. Finally, he shared about the impact he expects to achieve with LimeHK.

It’s great to have you with us, Andrew. Let’s start with a personal touch, can you describe your neighborhood and what makes it home?

Growing up in Wan Chai, I have fond memories of exploring southern playground and engaging with the friendly people in the neighborhood. Moreover, Wan Chai’s central location in Hong Kong makes it a convenient and accessible neighborhood to live in. It’s always hustling and busy when you look out the window.

For someone visiting Hong Kong for the first time, what are some of your favorite places or hidden spots that you’d recommend to a friend?

There are a lot of famous and Michelin star restaurants in Hong Kong but I prefer some of the lesser known places. My fav go to place would be a restaurant called Rose Kitchen which is on a 2nd floor of a commercial building. It’s a really good Cha Chan Teng that has everything you would want.

Where do you spend most of your time, and what does a typical day entail?

I spend most of my time at the home and the office, living so close to work gives me the flexibility to host meeting with colleagues and clients when needed. But also give me the freedom to work from home, I would say I spend around 60% of the time at the office and 40% at home

What are your main focuses at the moment?

Blessed to have a little baby girl join our family in 2024 and she’s definitely the main focus for me at the moment.

How has your experience on both the agency and client sides influenced the way you structure 4HK’s services to meet diverse client needs?

Taking what I’ve learn from the client side and agency side and seeing where all the bottlenecks are. I’ve tried to come up with a formula that provides maximum flexibility to cater clients’ needs in this competitive and changing economy. For example, we’ve tried to include some perks and discounts in our pricing for analytics and reporting tools to help our client understand their data better.

With your extensive background, what do you think are the most critical factors for startups looking to build a strong brand presence in today’s market?

Market Fit is crucial, if the market doesn’t have a demand for it. No matter how great or useful the product or service is it just won’t sell. Having the right market fit allow for different marketing incentives and strategies to be implemented for a great effect.

How do you balance innovation with measurable results at 4HK, especially when working with SMEs that may have limited resources?

We provide our client with a real time reporting dashboard called The ROOT. It provides a customized dashboard with all the essential metrics, conversions and performance data to help the SMEs with their decision making based off of their own 1st party data.

What unique challenges have you faced working with Hong Kong-based startups, and how do you help them navigate these obstacles?

Helping them with validation and proof of concept, is a common theme for startups and SMEs in Hong Kong. The product/service must have a viable revenue and growth potential in order to attract investors and other stakeholders. The challenge I would say is getting the fundamentals right, having a strong team and being able to pivot when needed.

What are some of the most exciting projects 4HK is currently working on, and what makes them stand out?

There are tons of startups and SMEs that we’ve worked with and are currently working with. There are two ventures that come to mind, one is Butlerasia which focuses on Proptech, AI and workflow automation. They’ve been growing their team and getting lots of good traction in Hong Kong and other startup contest. Another venture is Wada Bento, an F&B startup from HKSTP they build their hot food vending machines in various commercial building and during COVID their business model expanded quite remarkably.

When taking on a new client or project, what are the key factors you consider in selecting the right team members and technical profiles to bring the vision to life?

The main factor to consider is the mindset of the team and if they’re willing to try new things or experimentation. In the world of digital marketing, the optimization we help are client are constantly changing and adapting to different feedback from our target audience. If the mindset isn’t open to explore marketing channels, formats and ideas, its going to make our jobs that much more difficult.

Could you share a bit about the impact you aim to achieve with LimeHK, and how its accelerator program has helped shape the startup scene in Hong Kong?

LimeHK is a local accelerator / incubation program that is aimed to help Startups and SMEs off the ground. We help with a lot of the fundamental setup including address, bank account, accounting and other business tool to get the company up and running. We’re lucky to have the experience and luxury of leveraging 4HK with marketing support but at the end of the day it’s meeting a new entrepreneur and helping them with their success.

What tools or software are essential to your daily work and why?

Notion, Gmail, Slack, WhatsApp, Drive WeChat basically any project management or communication tool that helps us stay on top of our priorities and task.

What do you see as the biggest transformations happening in your field right now?

It has to be AI and how generative AI will start to learn from our prompts, results and commands. As developers, designers and other automations are replaced by AI, we will need to reinvent ourselves to embrace AI instead of being replaced by them. It’s definitely a game changer not just in the marketing sector but all industries.

Beyond your professional work, what activities or hobbies help you stay inspired and creative?

I like browsing and following different podcast, YouTube channels and other media to stay informed on what’s the latest trends and updates in the market. The best thing about digital marketing is that I get to apply my interest and see it in action when a campaign is launch so it’s really living the dream.

How do you manage distractions during intense creative work? Do you have any tips for staying focused when tackling big projects?

Taking mini breaks or having a schedule to allocate your work is crucial. Making sure if you allocate 1 hour for a proposal, you don’t spend more than 1 hour, that’s a commitment to plan for yourself and manage your schedule as well. If you can fit everything within your working hours, I definitely think you should relax after work, not a fan of mixing work and home together.

Can you name the global issue you are most passionate about and why?

Probably would be the US election and how the new regime will impact the big brands of marketing: Meta, Alphabet, Apple, X, Tik Tok and other media companies. That will have an impact on how we spend our marketing dollars as well here in Hong Kong.

Lastly, which unusual skill do you pride yourself in having?

It would probably be the ability to sleep anytime anywhere, having that skill definitely helps your recover and recoup energy for the endless task and work ahead of you.
