Georgette Moe is the Senior Director of Client Strategy at Emplicit. In an interview with TIA, she described her early starts in the industry and her current role in the agency. Moe also listed the challenges brands face when advertising in Amazon and explained the services that Emplicit offers for companies to enhance their presence in Amazon.

To kick things off please, as a local, what would you recommend doing there when Minneapolis-St. Paul?

While in Minneapolis/St. Paul, I’d recommend enjoying the parks and walking trails along numerous lakes around the city. Also, I’d recommend having breakfast at the St. Paul Grill and an afternoon at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, or the Minnesota Zoo. Catch live music entertainment at First Avenue (where Prince got his start), the State Theatre, the Fine Line, or our larger venues like the Xcel Energy Center.

How did you get started in the industry?

My career started at Target Corporation as a Marketing Associate. While there I learned about retail, CRM, marketing, and merchandising. Plus, I was just beginning to hear more and more about e-commerce. I had an amazing mentor and found my career passion.

Could you explain to us briefly what your role as Senior Director of Client Strategy at Emplicit?

I provide clients with data-driven strategic recommendations that are designed to support and drive their goals. Each brand is unique, I complete research and analysis to uncover insights for brands about their Amazon customer, competition, channels, and marketplace opportunities and challenges.

How do you prioritize and manage your daily tasks and responsibilities?

To prioritize my tasks, I make a list and then determine what I need to do immediately, what I need to schedule a time to complete, what I should delegate, and lastly, I decide what I should not do. I like to use time-blocking techniques to dedicate specific blocks of time to a project. I also regularly review, update tasks, and reprioritize my projects as needed.

What challenges are brands facing when it comes to advertising on Amazon in 2023?

Overall, brands are experiencing increasing competition, margin pressure, and consumer uncertainty around the economy. As more brands recognize the potential of advertising on Amazon, competition for ad placements and visibility has intensified, leading to rising advertising costs, and making it harder for smaller brands to compete. Additionally, managing an advertising budget and optimizing performance requires ongoing monitoring and action. Popular and competitive keywords can be expensive to bid on, making it difficult for brands to achieve profitability goals. And we can’t forget that Amazon frequently updates its search and advertising algorithms, which can also impact ad performance.

Leveraging these insights, I craft strategic recommendations that are data-driven and actionable, providing a clear roadmap for informed decision-making. My approach emphasizes research, actionable recommendations, and data-driven decision-making. This ensures the strategy we provide is not only effective but also tailored to drive growth and success for the client.

Data and analytics play a critical role in measuring the success of client strategies. Can you talk about your approach to using data-driven insights to optimize strategies?

In my role, data and analytics are pivotal in defining and optimizing strategies. I utilize advanced analytics tools to comprehensively analyze customer behavior, market trends, brand performance, and competition within the Amazon ecosystem. Interpreting this data, I identify patterns and trends to support strategic adjustments, refinement of targeting, and potential market opportunities and challenges. My approach involves understanding KPIs, leveraging and interpreting data for actionable insights, and iteratively optimizing strategies. In the realm of client strategy development, staying aligned with industry trends is vital. What emerging digital applications or technologies do you see as game-changers in the digital marketing landscape?

There are many emerging technologies that are gaining popularity and have the potential to significantly impact digital marketing. AI and machine learning algorithms are being used to optimize advertising campaigns, personalize content, and predict consumer behavior. Voice-activated devices are increasing voice search. AR and VR technologies are creating immersive and differentiated marketing experiences. But the most impactful may be social media platforms integrating with e-commerce features, allowing users to shop directly within the platform. Social commerce is blurring the lines between social media and online shopping.

What do you enjoy about working in brands’ digital ecosystems?

There are many aspects I enjoy about working with a brand’s digital ecosystem. It requires staying at the forefront of technological advancements and digital marketing trends. Digital ecosystems are dynamic and often present unique challenges that require creative problem-solving, requiring continuous learning, and skill development to adapt to changes in the industry. Working in brands’ digital ecosystems is rewarding because I appreciate the dynamic, data-driven, and creative nature of the field. It offers opportunities for impact, innovation, and personal and professional growth.

Who is a person you look up to, and what qualities in them do you find particularly inspiring?

One individual I admire and find inspiring is Simon Sinek. His insights into leadership, communication, and the fundamental ‘why’ that drives our actions have influenced my approach to strategy development. Sinek’s talent for motivating and sparking innovative thinking is something I continually strive to embody. In a dynamic business landscape where change is constant, I’ve gained valuable and sustaining insights, reinforcing my belief in the importance of purpose-driven actions.

I am a huge fan of music. I have a very extensive music collection and love to see live shows of my favorite artists.

One of the best pieces of advice I received came from my father. He would often tell me, 'Try again,' instilling in me the importance of persistence. He taught me to persist in pursuing what I truly wanted in both my career and personal life, always believing in my potential.
