Nicolás Mejías: “Clients always look for your previous work”

Buenos Aires, April 24th, 2018

Buenos Aires-based digital agency P3Design started in 2002 as an independent agency with a wide array of professionals specialized in new media outlets. Since then, they have seen a steep growth, working for different companies with different needs always listening to the clients and trying to reach a joint vision over the products to be developed.

After obtaining his university degree and going through several work experiences, P3Design Director Nicolás Mejías started the agency with his friend and partner Andrés Fernandez Fantl. In an interview with TIA, Mejías described his role at the agency and gave us an inside look on his daily work.

How would you describe your current role?

The founder has no choice but to start in whatever role is most necessary for the company to exist. Today, as a Director of the agency, I carry out several roles such as Creating culture, Account Management, Creativity, Project Management and How Money Gets Spent.

How did you realize that you wanted to work with clients?

There wasn’t a time when I had to decide whether I wanted to work with clients or not. Instead, there was a necessity to create business opportunities for an agency that was starting to grow. My relationship with clients was at first as a consultant. I started to look for a strategy that would be successful over time. I knew the work had to be useful for the agency and the client.

How do you organize and prioritize the different projects?

You can’t have a rigid view. The most interesting project might not be the most profitable. We need to take a little risk and do some new stuff. We work with many freelance partners and with temporary staffers based on project’s needs.

How do you earn trust from a client?

Clients always look for your previous work. It’s not common for them to take a decision without previously looking at your work. That’s the problem for new companies and that’s why agencies are usually started by creative partners. Clients need solutions, and our job is to find the one ‘that fits you better.’ Beyond the portfolio, clients also see values and vision from the team, recognizing the importance of the exceptional individuals who make up these agencies

How is to work with a partner at the agency?

The relationship with Andrés strengthened by playing football matches over the weekend. We were encouraged to start the company by people close to us that saw that we could work well together as a team. It’s important to be honest in every aspect of life. We get along very well and have similar values.

From where do you come up with good ideas?

Ideas come at the most unexpected moment. It’s a process based on market research, industry analysis and your previous experiences, which are essential and facilitate ideas to flow.

What’s the thing that you like and dislike the most from your work?

I like to see how difficult things can be done, share the work space with enjoyable people and see how the digital industry is changing. On the other hand, I don’t like the fact that everything changes so fast and not being appreciated despite being highly committed.

What advice would you give to a new professional eager to work in the field?

Be committed and hungry for knowledge. Take advantage to all opportunities, take risks, read, travel, relate with people and live through new experiences. Spend time with your family and friends.

Where do you see the advertising sector in five years?

Highly focused on digital aspects. Argentina has a very interesting creative talent so I’m sure the sector will grow fast.

How does the future for P3Design look like?

Tools and technology will deeply change in five years but I don’t believe we’ll change the way we do things and take on challenges.
