“The Goal Isn’t to Replace Expertise, It’s to Amplify It” — Timothy Buttigieg of 9H on the Human-Centric Future of Tech

Malta, April 22nd, 2026

Operating at the high-stakes intersection of creativity and technology, 9H is a technology company dedicated to solving complex business challenges through people-centric innovation. With a strategic footprint across Malta, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, the agency — a subsidiary of 9HCapital plc — drives growth by blending technical precision with creative strategy. By focusing on measurable value and scalable resilience, 9H empowers enterprises to navigate digital transformation through an aggressive acquisition strategy in Europe and the MENA region, ensuring that every solution delivers a tangible, real-world impact.

Leading this ambitious growth is Timothy Buttigieg, CEO of 9H, whose leadership style is rooted in the discipline and independence of high-level competitive sport. Having traveled the world as a table tennis athlete from the age of 12, Timothy brings a unique “early bird” rigour to the digital space, balancing aggressive business expansion with a human-centric approach to management. A firm believer that technology should serve as an enabler rather than a replacement, he focuses on simplifying complexity and building the one currency that remains non-negotiable in an AI-driven future: Trust. For Timothy, the future of the industry belongs to those who can connect the dots between technology, business, and human behaviour.

Timothy, it’s a pleasure to connect. Where did you grow up, and were there any early experiences or influences that shaped your passion for digital experiences?

I grew up in Malta. From a young age, I was heavily involved in table tennis, which meant traveling internationally on my own from around the age of 12. That independence shaped how I think and operate today. At the same time, I was always curious about computers and experimenting with them, breaking things and building them back up and learning how to code. That mix of discipline, exposure, and curiosity naturally led me into digital.

You’re leading 9H across Malta and the Mena region, how does this cross-cultural blend shape your approach to leadership?

It comes down to understanding people deeply. Each market has its own cultural nuances, and leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all. You have to adapt and create environments where teams can perform at their best while still aligning with business goals. What’s interesting is that our client base often overlaps culturally across regions, so understanding those dynamics internally helps us deliver better externally.

When you’re off the clock, what’s one “local secret” in Malta that every first-time visitor should experience?

Go to Gozo. It’s a reminder of a slower pace of life that Malta has largely lost. It resets you.

How do you structure your week to balance an aggressive acquisition strategy with being a present, human-centric leader?

I start early at 6am most days. Mornings are my most productive time, so I use them for strategic thinking and decision-making. That creates space later in the day to focus on people, conversations, and being present with the team.

At 9H, you focus on “Technology that works for people.” How do you ensure innovation empowers your team rather than replacing them?

At 9H, technology is an enabler. It allows our teams to deliver better outcomes, faster and more efficiently. The goal isn’t to replace expertise, it’s to amplify it.

When integrating complex systems, where do you find the most friction — and how do you turn that into clarity?

The biggest challenge is legacy systems. Many clients haven’t invested in technology for years, so we’re often integrating outdated infrastructure into modern, scalable solutions. The key is simplifying complexity and finding clean ways to merge the old with the new without compromising performance.

How do you define the “9H way” of making digital interactions seamless for complex enterprise challenges?

It’s about clarity and outcomes. We simplify complexity, align closely with clients, and focus on building solutions that actually work both technically and commercially.

You’re a proponent of gamification. How do you apply those principles to corporate workflows to make “real work” more enjoyable?

Gamification, for us, is about recognition and reward. Wins, whether client or internal, are celebrated. We encourage people to enjoy their time, not just manage it. Even something like leave is structured to support real rest, not life admin. It’s about creating an environment people want to be part of.

How do you provide your teams with creative freedom while maintaining predictable results for clients?

We’re a process-driven company, but not all teams operate the same way. Tech requires structure and precision. Creative needs space. The balance comes from aligning everyone to the same end goal, that of delivering for the client, while allowing each discipline to operate in the way that gets the best results.

From a UX perspective, what does scalability look like when a platform grows to serve millions?

Scalability is about performance and resilience. The infrastructure behind the UX has to scale dynamically to ensure the experience remains seamless, regardless of demand. If performance drops, the user experience fails, so that’s definitely a non-negotiable.

What is the biggest misconception business leaders have about AI-powered workflows?

That AI will replace people. It won’t. It will enable experts to perform at a much higher level. The value shifts, but it doesn’t disappear.

In a future driven by AI, what is the one ‘human’ value an agency provides that will still be worth paying for?

Trust. Clients want partners who understand their business and can solve real problems. Creativity and critical thinking will always matter, but trust is what makes it all work.

Outside of 9H, what helps you fully disconnect?

Tennis, travel, and spending time with family. Watching tennis at the highest level is something I really enjoy now.

From your personal point of view, what is the greatest challenge of our time?

Uncertainty. Geopolitical instability, economic pressure, climate challenges, they all impact how businesses operate. The challenge is helping clients grow and scale despite that. At 9H, we focus on delivering solutions that create measurable value — so if we undertake a project, it needs to drive real impact.

For a student captivated by this world: what’s one ‘clue’ about the future they won’t find in any textbook?

The future belongs to people who can connect dots in technology, business, and human behaviour. It’s not about mastering one thing, but understanding how everything fits together.

And finally — what’s one unexpected fact about you?

Most people wouldn’t guess how much competitive sport shaped how I think and lead today.
